Class and Gender Reading

In general when I think of the development of a class heiarchy the sexual aspect does not immediately come to mind. However, it seems only logical that it would be one of the first defining barriers between classes. Prostitution in the Victorian era was seen as a dirty profession and people who were prostitutes were at the bottom of the class ladder. Its interesting to see the comparison between the last reading which mentioned prostitutes and this reading. It seems that, according to this article, prostitutes are the lowest of the low and the class structure is rigid and immovable. However, in the other reading the prostitute was a fairly influential member in her community and was able to advance up the social ladder.
